About Manali

Manali sits at around 2,050 metres where the Kullu Valley narrows and the Beas river comes rushing down from the high ranges. Snow-capped peaks rise on almost every side, and the town is wrapped in tall deodar forest. It is one of the most loved holiday spots in India for families, honeymooners and adventure lovers alike, and it suits all three without much effort.

The town has two quite different moods. New Manali, around Mall Road, is busy and practical, with hotels, restaurants and shops. Old Manali, across the Manalsu stream, is calmer, with village houses, apple trees and relaxed cafés. Close by stand the wooden Hadimba Devi Temple, set in a cedar grove, and the village of Vashisht with its natural hot springs.

Most visitors spend a day at Solang Valley for snow play, cable car rides and, in season, paragliding. Since the Atal Tunnel opened, it has become easy to drive through to Sissu in Lahaul for a completely different landscape of bare mountains and waterfalls. Rohtang Pass is still open to a limited number of vehicles in summer on a permit system. Further down the valley, Naggar has a historic castle and art gallery, and Kullu is the base for river rafting.

Manali is also the starting point for the famous road to Leh, open only in summer, and for the Kunzum Pass route into Spiti. If you are combining hill stations, a Shimla–Manali tour is the classic choice, while couples often prefer our Manali honeymoon package.

Peak periods are May–June and the Christmas–New Year week, when traffic to Solang and Atal Tunnel can be slow. Planning early helps, and we can build an itinerary that avoids the worst queues.

Best time to visit Manali

Summer (March–June): The busiest season, with pleasant days and cool nights. Early spring may still have snow at Solang and beyond Atal Tunnel. Rohtang usually opens for permitted vehicles from around May or June, depending on snow clearance.

Monsoon (July–September): Green and quieter, but landslides can block the highway along the Beas, and adventure activities may be suspended. Travel only with flexible dates.

Autumn (October–November): Clear skies, golden apple orchards and fewer crowds. Excellent for sightseeing and photography; nights get cold by November.

Winter (December–February): Cold, with snowfall likely in town and very likely at Solang. Roads beyond Solang and through the tunnel may close after heavy snow. A good choice for couples and families who want a white holiday, with warm clothing.

How to reach Manali

By air: The nearest airport is Bhuntar near Kullu, around 50 km away, with limited and weather-dependent flights. Most travellers from Pune and Mumbai fly to Chandigarh and drive roughly 300 km to Manali in about 8–10 hours, or fly to Delhi.

By train: There is no practical railhead close by. Chandigarh and Kalka are the usual stations, followed by a road journey. We offer Chandigarh to Manali taxis and you can read our Chandigarh to Manali by road guide.

By road: Delhi is around 530 km away, roughly 12–14 hours, and overnight Volvo buses are popular. A Delhi to Manali taxi or a Shimla to Manali transfer gives you more comfort and flexibility.

Many travellers from Maharashtra combine the journey with Shimla, arriving by one route and leaving by another, which saves time and avoids retracing the same road.

Travel tips

  • Rent snow boots and jackets at Solang or in town if you are not carrying winter gear; good grip matters more than style.
  • Leave very early for Solang, Atal Tunnel and Rohtang to avoid long traffic queues.
  • Mobile networks are good in town but patchy beyond the tunnel. Carry some cash for small shops and adventure operators.
  • Please dress modestly at temples and ask before photographing local people, especially women in traditional dress.

Three to four nights is ideal: one day for local sightseeing, one for Solang, one for Atal Tunnel or Rohtang, and an optional day for Naggar or Kullu. Add more time if you want treks or rafting.
