Overview

This short tour pairs two very different kinds of peace. In Amritsar you experience the Golden Temple, the spiritual heart of Sikhism, along with its langar, its glowing evenings and the history of Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition. In Dharamshala and McLeodganj you move into the Dhauladhar hills, home of the Tibetan community in exile, with monasteries, prayer flags and cool forest walks.

It works well for families, including grandparents, and for anyone looking for a meaningful break without long treks. The pace is relaxed: two nights in each place, with the longest drive around 5–6 hours. You see the Golden Temple both at night and in the early morning, attend the flag-lowering ceremony at the Attari–Wagah border, and in the hills visit the Dalai Lama temple complex, Bhagsunag and Kangra Fort or Norbulingka.

Amritsar has direct or one-stop flights from Mumbai and Pune, and there are good rail links via Delhi. The tour starts and ends in Amritsar, so you can fly both ways. If you have more time, our Himachal with Amritsar tour adds Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie, and our Dharamshala guide has more ideas.

Day-wise itinerary

  1. Day1

Day 1: Arrive Amritsar – Golden Temple by night

Golden Temple glowing at dusk, reflected in the sacred pool of Amrit Sarovar

On arrival at Amritsar airport or railway station, our driver takes you to your hotel. Rest and freshen up after the journey.

In the evening, visit the Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib). Cover your head with a scarf or bandana, remove your shoes at the deposit counter and wash your feet before entering. Walk the marble parikrama around the sacred pool as the gilded temple glows in the water. Queues for the inner sanctum can be long, especially on weekends and festivals; be patient and follow the volunteers. Many visitors stay for the Palki Sahib ceremony late at night. Return to the hotel for dinner, or eat at the langar, served free to all.

  2. Day2

Day 2: Amritsar – heritage walk and Attari–Wagah

Red sandstone flame memorial at Jallianwala Bagh surrounded by gardens

If you can wake early, return to the Golden Temple at dawn, when it is quieter and the kirtan is especially moving. After breakfast, walk to Jallianwala Bagh, a short distance away, where the memorial and bullet-marked walls tell the story of the 1919 massacre. Nearby, the Partition Museum in the old Town Hall tells personal stories of 1947; check opening days before you go.

After lunch (try Amritsari kulcha and lassi), drive around 30 km to the Attari–Wagah border for the Beating Retreat ceremony. Arrive early, as seating fills quickly and security checks take time; carry ID and avoid bags. Return to Amritsar for dinner.

  3. Day3

    Day 3: Amritsar to Dharamshala

Stone gateway and ramparts of the ruined Kangra Fort

After breakfast drive to Dharamshala, around 200 km and roughly 5–6 hours via Pathankot. The flat Punjab fields give way to the low Kangra hills and then to the snow-streaked wall of the Dhauladhar range.

If you leave early enough, visit Kangra Fort on the way, one of the oldest forts in the region, set above the meeting of two rivers, with sweeping views; entry tickets are extra. Alternatively, stop at the Brajeshwari Devi temple in Kangra town. Continue to your hotel in Dharamshala or McLeodganj and spend a quiet evening. Many hotels here have balconies facing the valley, perfect with a cup of tea.

Day 4: McLeodganj – Dalai Lama temple and Bhagsunag

Grey stone St John in the Wilderness church among deodar trees

A day in McLeodganj, the Tibetan heart of the hills. Start at the Tsuglagkhang, the Dalai Lama temple complex, with its prayer halls, prayer wheels and the Tibet Museum; dress modestly and walk clockwise around the shrines. Then visit St John in the Wilderness, an old stone church in the deodar forest.

After lunch at a Tibetan café (try thukpa or momos), drive or walk to Bhagsunag temple and the waterfall beyond. If you enjoy walking, continue up to Dharamkot for views, or drive to Naddi viewpoint for sunset over the Dhauladhar. In the afternoon, Norbulingka Institute near Sidhbari is a lovely alternative, showcasing Tibetan art and crafts. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 5: Dharamshala to Amritsar – departure

McLeod Ganj town on a ridge with the snowy Dhauladhar range behind

After breakfast check out and drive back to Amritsar, around 200 km and roughly 5–6 hours. If you did not visit Kangra Fort or Norbulingka earlier, one of them can be fitted in on the way, depending on your flight or train time.

Our driver drops you at Amritsar airport or railway station for your journey home. For evening flights, there may be time for a final stop at the Golden Temple or a quick bite of Amritsari food. If you prefer to leave from Pathankot by train, tell us in advance and we will arrange a Pathankot drop instead, which is closer to Dharamshala.

What time is the Attari–Wagah border ceremony?
It takes place in the late afternoon, close to sunset, so timings change through the year. We plan the departure from Amritsar so you arrive early enough to get seats.
